You’ve found the color, shape and price you love. It looks wonderful in the product photos. But will it fit through your doorway? Will the seats feel comfortable? And will it swallow the space you use to walk through your living room? Buying furniture online is easier when you measure before getting attached.
Measure the full room
Record the length and width of the usable floor area, not just the empty wall. Mark where doors swing, windows sit and walkways need to stay clear. Painter’s tape on the floor can help you visualize the sofa’s footprint before you commit.
Check the delivery route
Measure entrances, hallway widths, elevator dimensions, stair turns and interior doorways. Remember to account for packaging and whether legs or sections can be removed. Ask the retailer for packaged dimensions and delivery requirements if they’re not listed.
Look beyond overall length
Seat depth, seat height, arm height and back support affect how the sofa feels. A deep seat can be lovely for lounging but less comfortable for someone who prefers sitting upright. Compare dimensions with a chair or sofa you already find comfortable.
Consider the fabric and your daily life
Think about pets, children, food spills, sunlight and how often you can clean upholstery. Check actual care instructions, durability claims and whether cushion covers are removable. Product photographs don’t always show how texture or color appears under your lighting.
Check returns before you order
Large furniture can have special return conditions, delivery fees and collection charges. Read the written terms, confirm warranty coverage and ask about assembly. A bargain is less appealing if returning an unsuitable sofa becomes expensive.
Leave room for the rest of your life
A living room needs to work when people walk, play, clean and relax—not only when it’s photographed. If your existing sofa is still usable, explore our living-room comfort upgrades before replacing it. Sometimes a different layout solves more than a new purchase.
